This number belongs to a debt collection agency known as Elmwood Associates out of Buffalo, NY. BEWARE! These guys are scam artists and will call you posing as "legal couriers" or "court officials". They will claim that they have certified documents (pertaining to a court appearance that is scheduled to begin a lawsuit against you) that need to be signed immediately in person by you and that they are going to come out to your residence or place of work to have you sign. Don't fret, they never show up. What they want you to do is call the 888 in a panic and agree to pay off whatever debt they claim you owe and that will call off the legal proceedings.

IF you were actually going to be sued, an official from the sheriff's dept. will serve the papers. They certainly would not call you first to see if you are going to be around because most people prefer to dodge these things. For peace of mind, call your local county civil court clerk. If there were actual documents that needed to be signed by you or served to you, they would have record of it.

The "legal courier" will almost always call from a blocked number but will leave you an 888 number such as the one above so that you can call Elmwood Associates and strike a deal to pay your alleged debt thus calling off the courier and his bogus paperwork.

Sometimes the debt will actually be legitimate, other times not. Use your head, keep your cool and know that anything coming from Elmwood Associates is a scam. They are trying to scare you into paying them money. Don't fall for it. Do your research and remember, NEVER EVER give out or verify your social security number or banking/financial information over the phone.

Any debt collection agency that is legitimate and following the guidelines of the law, will send you written notification via US mail of the debt, how much you owe and how to go about rectifying the debt. I hope this helps. I loathe these scam artists and unfortunately, my info has been given to a few of them in the past several years so I have experience with handling them. Wish that I didn't.
